The great
German cars manufacturer BMW can trace its origins back into the last century.
In the 1930's, it built some of World's best sports and luxury cars. It
recovered from destruction in World War II and financial reversal in the
fifties; by the early seventies it was once again a major factor in the World
hyper-performance and luxury market. BMW is a German automobile, motorcycle and
engine manufacturing company founded in 1916. BMW stands for Bayerische Motoren
Werke (In English that would be: Bavarian Motor Works). BMW is part of the
"German Big 3" luxury automakers, along with Audi and Mercedes-Benz,
which are among the best-selling luxury automakers in the world.
BMW is
headquartered in Munich, Germany. BMW also owns Mini Cars, and Rolls-Royce
Motor Cars. In 2006 alone, BMW group, which includes Mini and Rolls-Royce,
produced 1,366,838 four wheeled vehicles. About 56% of BMW vehicles are powered
by petrol engines and remaining are powered by diesel engines.
The BMW logo is quiet unique in its design. It gives an individual quality to the brand identity of the company. The first ever BMW logo was created in 1916 and registered as the official trademark of the company. The roundel logo originates from the days of its aircraft heritage, and symbolizes spinning propeller. Also huge parts of the logo are the blue and white fields, colors of the Bavarian (State of Germany) flag. The BMW logo went through only slight changes over the years.
Since 1972, BMW model
names have commonly been a 3 digit number followed by 1, 2 or 3 letters. Some
of current models of BMW include the 1 series, which is BMW’s smallest car.
Also currently available are 2nd generation hatchback (F20). In
2014, the 4 Series will be released which will replace the 3 series coupe and convertible.
Overall, a 3 series has more of a sports car feel, whereas 5 series or a 7
series are more comfortable and luxurious.
